Web - Based Resources

The applied nature of many of the Department's research programs has led to the development of a number of web-based resources that provide valuable information to agricultural producers, agricultural extension personnel, cotton ginners, and others.  Web-based resources have been developed to assist agricultural producers in the calculation of cotton prices, evaluation of cotton harvest costs, cotton variety selection, and calculation of production costs.  A web-based resource has been developed to assist cotton ginners in selecting ginning processes to optimize cotton quality.

Cotton Price Calculator

The Cotton Price Calculator estimates cotton prices based on quality attribute premiums and discounts for the Texas/Oklahoma cotton markets.  The base price and quality attribute premiums and discounts are obtained from the Daily Price Estimation System (DPES), which is maintained and operated by the Cotton Economics Research Institute.  The DPES is a computerized price analysis system that uses an econometric model to analyze producer cotton prices and estimate quality premiums and discounts for the West Texas and East Texas/Oklahoma cotton marketing regions.  The Cotton Price Calculator allows the estimation of the price for a specific bale of cotton based on the DPES.

Cotton Harvest Cost Calculator

The Cotton Harvest Cost Calculator allows cotton producers to evaluate harvest costs for specific harvesting equipment configurations or to compare costs of alternative harvesting equipment configurations.  The Cotton Harvest Cost Calculator was developed using results from a research project that compared cost of alternative cotton harvesting systems in Texas.

Cotton Wizard Variety Selection Program

The Cotton Wizard Variety Selection Program aids cotton producers in selecting cotton varieties that will provide the greatest economic return.  The model uses lint and seed components from various cotton variety trials in a variety selection model that provides valuable information to cotton producers and breeders by simultaneously considering complex agronomic and economic characteristics of a group of varieties

Production Cost Calculator

The Production Cost Calculator assists crop producers in determining the true costs of production for enterprises within a farming operation.  Knowing the true production provides better information to make sound production, financial, and marketing decisions. The Production Cost Calculator is an information based management tool that can be used in conjunction with the present record system in calculating their true production costs. The Production Cost Calculator is based on Standardized Performance Analysis (SPA) methods and criteria.

GINQUAL

The GINQUAL is a cotton processing simulation model that was developed to evaluate the effects of gin operation parameters, such as, drying, cleaning and ginning on fiber quality factors.  The simulation model estimates cotton quality as it passes through the various sequenced of gin machinery used to process stripper harvested cotton.  The GINQUAL program can assists ginners in optimizing the ginning process.
